A man was shot in Civic Center Park this afternoon as two groups came prepared for a face-off downtown.
Denver police announced on Twitter the shooting is being investigated as a homicide, and police took a suspect into custody. Both the shooter and the victim were white men, police say.
The competing rallies appeared to be wrapping up when the gun went off. The man who was shot fell over, and was loaded into an ambulance. The man who fired the gun was immediately surrounded by police, who zip-tied his hands.
The shooting happened from short range. It was not immediately clear which side the shooter or the victim were associated with. After the shooting, police set up a line by the big red chair sculpture in front of the central public library. They pushed people back a few hundred yards. Anyone who said they saw anything was immediately pulled away by police.
The first rally was planned by John “Tig” Tiegen, an El Paso County resident and a part of President Donald Trump’s reelection effort in Colorado. He organized what he called a “Patriot Muster.” He promoted it over the last week to his tens of thousands of social media followers, and repeatedly on the conservative talk radio station KNUS.
In response, the Denver Communists, Colorado Socialist Revolution and other groups organized what they called “A Black Lives Matter Anti-Fascist Soup Drive.

” That appears to be a reference to Trump’s July claim that protesters had assaulted police officers with cans of soup. The event’s original title was “Rally to Oppose Fascism.”
By about 3 p.m., more than a hundred people had gathered on each side, with the crowd noticeably bigger on the side of the anti-fascists. Both sides shouted, sometimes through bullhorns, as police separated the two groups using fencing and on at least one occasion, what appeared to be pepper balls deployed at the anti-fascist side. Early on, some of the anti-fascist protesters burned a thin blue line flag in front of officers.
Later that hour, as the ‘patriot’ side started to leave, the shooting happened.
Through the afternoon the two sides had very little face-to-face interaction. Police had cordoned off the Greek Amphitheater, making it hard for the two sides to come into contact. Denver Police had help from at least one other metro-area sheriff’s department.
The dueling demonstrations are the latest in a series that evolved out of the much larger protests in the late spring after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
In a KNUS appearance on Thursday, Tiegen repeatedly said he didn’t want Saturday’s event to be violent.
“But if they come towards me and come at me violent, I’m coming back 10 times fold,” he told radio host Steffan Tubbs.
In a social media post early Saturday morning, Tiegen used coded language to instruct his followers on how to comply with Denver’s rules on carrying a firearm. Open carry is illegal, and gun owners must have a conceal carry permit.
On the other side, organizers of the Black Lives Matter event wrote on Facebook ahead of the event, “Our preferred strategy is to simply outnumber and outshine these fascists anytime they show their faces.
We want to send these worms back into their holes, demoralized and isolated, with only their racist, r*pist president to console them.”
